State Level Workshop on issues related to Corporal Punishment and Rights to Education

Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights along with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan held a state level workshop on issues related to Corporal Punishment and Right to Education on 24/03/2017 to sensitize Headmasters of the Secondary schools.

The Chief Guest for the function was Shri G. P. Bhat, Director of Education Dept. About 150 Headmasters attended this workshop. Topics on Learning and Success by Dr. Nandita Desouza, Director, Sethu; Corporal Punishment and its effects by Adv. Emidio Pinho and Inclusive Education for children with special needs by Mr. Suhas Thakurdesai, State Coordinator, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan for inclusive education.

The Chairperson Dr. (Mrs.) Sushma P. Kirtani highlighted the role of State Commission to monitor RTE Act, 2009 as one of the mandate of the Commission. She explained the physical, mental and emotional effects of corporal punishment and urged the participants to instruct the Teachers and primary school Headmasters with take home message so that corporal punishment can be abolished for the state of Goa.

The Secretary to the Commission Smt. Padma Jaiswal, I.A.S. also stressed on the need of fearless education in schools and how the schools should make the education more enjoyable to the students.

Chief Guest Shri G. P. Bhat stressed on alternative methods to discipline the child at school without using corporal punishment. He urged all the Headmasters to ask questions to the resource persons so that their doubts are clear and this will have benefit for students pursuing stress free education in schools.

 

The resource persons did excellent job and the workshop was much appreciated by all the Headmasters.
